Bio

Rhys Ellis is an award winning Director based in Meanjin / Brisbane, Australia. With a passion for storytelling and a strong eye for visuals, Rhys brings personal, real-world stories to life, often exploring themes of identity and place informed by his own mixed race background.

Alongside his narrative work, Rhys has built a strong body of commercial experience, directing campaigns for national and international brands across lifestyle, Tourism and Sport. Collaborating closely with agencies and production teams, Rhys brings a grounded, character-driven approach that elevates brand stories with emotional depth and visual precision.

His short film 'Granite Highway,' a 90s-set mystery shot in regional Queensland, has screened at major festivals including SXSW Sydney, CinefestOZ and Down Under Berlin, and is an AACTA Award contender.

Rhys’s work is defined by grounded, atmospheric worlds and a search for the shared truths we all experience. He is currently developing the feature adaptation of Granite Highway.
